In my off time I like to go out with my friends and discover new, delicious food to try.

Hi, it's great to meet you!
My name is James and I am from Washington, United States. In 2018 I graduated with my Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington. My favorite thing in the world is learning about and interacting with people from cultures all over the globe!

Hey there, it is good to meet you!
My name is Jessica and I'm from Manchester, United Kingdom. I have been teaching English in Spain since 2016. Whether you're looking to practice conversational English or prepare for an exam, I'd be happy to help you.
I've always thought that being able to speak another language is the closest thing to having a superpower. Some of my favourite things to learn in another language are idioms. In both teaching and learning, I look for the fun. It's the most effective way to learn.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked with children in a group home setting and nannying. Additionally, I have volunteered at lower-income elementary schools in Costa Rica to help aid with English language learning. I just completed my 120 hour TEFL and am excited to be working with Preply to help more people around the world expand their language abilities!

I am fully prepared with my TESOL certification and have experience in tutoring people in a variety of subjects, including math, science, and English. I have also observed classes for ESL learners and have many non-native English speaking friends with whom I regularly help to answer questions about English grammar and vocabulary.

I am a TEFL certified and experienced English teacher and have taught online and in the classroom for over two years. I love working with people from all over the world and I am experienced working with people from all different levels and with all different aims.

Motivate Potential Students:

Why don't you pop in and come have a chat with me? Let's discuss how I can help you. We will go over your goals together and decide on the best approach. I'm open to anything, are you?

Lets make learning English a checked mark on your to do list! My communicative and empathetic skills will make classes a safe place to make mistakes, learn and, above all, achieve your goals. Schedule the first class with me!

Conducting Trial Lessons that Create Long Term Students

If you haven't already embraced the insights from the Profile Optimization course, now's the time!

Implementing this invaluable information is your secret weapon to skyrocketing into those first exhilarating lessons! 🚀

Using Preply and Engoo resources for your lessons

Preply resources are categorized based on category as well as language learner level. The levels are A0, A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

Learn more about the different language levels, and how to recognize which level your student is at here.

Exploring Preply Resources

Click on "Learning Plans" from your Preply profile.

This will take you into the "Test Classroom". From here, click on "Library" from the icons in the top right corner.

From here you can explore all the resources available to you through Prely in all of your lessons!

Exploring Engoo Resources

Along with the built in Preply resources, we also recommend using Engoo. Engoo is completely free and does not require creating an account to use. There you can find daily articles on a wide variety of topics that are specially designed for English learners!

Navigate to https://engoo.com/app/materials/en

The one we recommend focusing on the most in your first lessons, is the Daily News section.

Ready to turn trial lessons into long term students? Let's rock it with energy and personality!

Another good video on trial lessons: https://youtu.be/U_2mDacKOuo?si=NyGNbPFS8zAGTaxI

Introduction:
Break the ice with your student by asking questions and sharing a little bit about yourself. Keep your greeting and introduction warm and friendly. First impressions last!
Some good questions to ask are:
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- What do you find most challenging about English?
- What do you do for work?
Crafting a Customized Lesson Plan:
Start strong by asking, "Why are you studying English?" Preply has a huge variety of materials on a vast number of subjects. You can pick a subject based on the reason that your student is studying English. Craft a lesson plan that feels tailor-made. Suggest a mix—maybe an Engoo article one week for pronunciation and new vocabulary, and the next week, dive into Preply coursework. Gauge their interest with, "How does that feel?"
Engage with Engoo:
Pull up Engoo's daily news during your conversation. Assess their level—say, "I think you're advanced or intermediate." Show them the vocab associated with an article. Explain the lesson: speaking and discussing opinions. Share a link to Engoo and say, "Before our next lesson, pick an article on a subject that you like, and let me know." This gives them something to do before the next lesson, keeping them engaged. This also makes the learning process interesting and enjoyable.
Ideal English Class and Setting Goals:
Ask, "How would your ideal class look?" Add any goals they share to your list. This keeps it personalized.
Personal Ending and Scheduling:
Five minutes before ending, ask, "Any questions for me?" Your goal is to keep building rapport and connection with you student, so keep this personal.
Move to scheduling. "What's your preferred time?" If they choose a slot, say, "Great! I'll block that out for you on my calendar so nobody else grabs it. Let me know once you've sorted your subscription, and I'll confirm your slot." This way you are doing a favor for them. It also adds a sense of urgency to confirm their spot before someone else takes it.
If you offer this, make sure to block out that time after the lesson by adding a "time off" block to your Preply calendar.
Assume they will subscribe - Never Ask for It:
Never ask for the subscription—assume it. You're providing value, and they'll see it.
Utilize Engoo and Alternate with Preply:
Share the wealth of resources on Engoo. Suggest alternating between Preply and Engoo each week for variety.
Setting Vocabulary Goals:
In the trial, ask, "How many new words per week do you think you can learn?" Set goals—when it comes time for them to resubscribe, they can look back on how much they have accomplished. This will remind them of the value they have received and motivate them to resubscribe to continue on their journey with you.

Use this optional presentation with your trial lesson students as a handy guide. Simply share your screen and go through it in your lesson. Feel free to tell your students that you created this for them. Download and customize it as you want!

Obtaining your first reviews

Once you get your first non-trial lesson, ask your student to leave a review in the lesson. Then message them this afterwards:

Dear [NAME],It was truly wonderful chatting with you today, and I trust you're finding our lessons enjoyable.I have a small favor to ask, and I greatly appreciate your consideration. Could you kindly share your positive experience by leaving a review on my profile? Your feedback is not only valuable to me but also contributes to showcasing my teaching approach on Preply, making it all the more rewarding for me to continue offering lessons on this platform. As a token of my appreciation, I'd like to keep your rate at $10 per lesson going forward.Thank you so much for your time and support. I look forward to our continued lessons!Warm regards,[YOUR NAME].
